Guilford County Department of Public Health is alerting residents that a fox found on E. Steeplechase Road in Pleasant Garden and a raccoon found on Greenway Drive in High Point tested positive for the rabies virus. These are the twelfth and thirteenth cases of rabies in Guilford County this year. The fox was picked up on 6/23/2008 and tested positive on 6/24/2008. The raccoon was picked up on 6/21/2008 and tested positive on 6/24/2008. No domestic animals were exposed to either rabid animal.
“Getting your pet vaccinated against rabies is the best way to protect your pet, your family and our community from rabies,” states Merle Green, Health Director. “I urge you to take advantage of one of the many upcoming, low cost clinics.”

The cost of the rabies vaccination at these clinics will be five dollars ($5.00) per shot. This vaccination will protect the animal from rabies for one year.
In addition to rabies vaccination, please observe the following suggestions to prevent the spread of rabies:
• Do not try to separate fighting animals.
• Avoid strange and/or sick animals.
• Keep pets on a leash when in public and supervised when outdoors.
• Do not approach, play with or try to rescue wild or unfamiliar animals.
• Do not leave pet food outside to attract wild animals.
• Report any strays or animals acting strangely to Animal Control at 641-5990.
