SHERIFF’S BEAT TELEVISION SHOW V11E06 - BEYOND THE MYTHS

In a departure from the usual format, this week’s time is devoted to showing the interesting video “Beyond the Myths:  The Jail in Your Community.”   Produced by the National Institute of Corrections, this program begins with famous jail scenes from various Hollywood feature films, and interviews with the public about the function of a jail.  There is obviously a huge gap between the typical perceived purpose of jail and the reality.

There are over 3,000 jails in the US.
The four functions of a jail
Jails function 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, unlike other public-funded services.
Jail and prison: What’s the difference?
Ten million people processed through jails annually
Jails are indeed a self-contained community.
Community funded, yet with a high level of potential liability
Inmate living conditions reflect the true values of its community.
Would your jail be humane enough to house your family member?
