Our staff provides facility assessments for basic sanitation standards in childcare centers and centers in a residence. Some of these standards include:

  • Handwashing facilities and techniques
  • Approved water supply and wastewater disposal
  • Proper foodhandling
  • Diaper changing
  • Proper storage of chemicals, cleaning supplies and medicines
  • Indoor Air Quality
Facilities are visited twice per year. The result is a Sanitation Grade of the facility. These grades are posted at each Childcare Center. A Center is either Superior, Approved, Provisional or Disapproved. A copy of our Field Report is forwarded to the Division of Child Development. Children's Environmental Health's report is part of the Division's 5 Star Rating system.

If a center receives a provisional classification, a reinspection is required within 7 days. The Operator may request a longer period of time for repairs or construction issues.

When a Childcare Center receives a disapproved, the Environmental Health Specialist and the Owner discuss the issues and a time frame to correct the problems is established before the Center can be reinspected.

Plan Review of any new Centers and any modifications made to existing Centers is required. Please contact your Environmental Health Specialist for further information.
