| I want to sell food. What equipment do I need? |
Food Service equipment will depend upon your concept, type of utensils to be used by your customer, the number of seats and a couple other factors. It helps to completely develop your menu. To start out, download our Application and Information Letter for a Health Department overview. Then visit a Restaurant Equipment Supply house. The Supply House's designer will match your concept, your menu and your budget to their equipment. They can also nearly match your concept to the minimum requirements for food service equipment. |

| My Nonprofit group wants to conduct a fundraiser. Tell me the Health code for foodservice. |
This is probably one of our most popular requests in the warm months of the year. We'll need to see your group's official IRS 501.3.C papers. Also, on your group's letterhead, provide us with the details of your fundraiser, such as the foods you want to sell, when and where your group will raise funds. If you're off-site of your location, for example a Church fundraiser in the parking lot of an Autoparts Store, then you'll need to provide us with a letter from the Autopart's Store granting permission for fundraising. Fax or deliver all of these to our office for written release to conduct your fundraiser. If you're in the City of Greensboro, you'll need to obtain a Privilege License. Our approval will provide your group the necessary paperwork for the City of Greensboro to process your application for a Privilege License. |

Congratulations! We encourage you to pursue your interests. You'll need a bachelor's degree with 30 hours of science to your credit. Once you're employed by a Local or State Health Department as a Sanitarian Intern, you'll experience a brief introduction/training period with your employer. You'll then be in Centralized Training. Centralized Training is an intense learning experience as a Public Health Sanitarian Intern. All expenses of the Centralized Training are paid for by the State of North Carolina. Upon successful completion, you'll gain field experience and ultimately will be given the opportunity to be Standardized by State Officials and Local Management. You'll rapidly progress to the point of comfort with the profession. Within the first couple of years of employment, you'll also have to take and pass the National Exam for a Registered Sanitarian. Upon success with the National Exam, you'll be granted the rights, duties, benefits and responsibilities of a Public Health Sanitarian! |

| I want to manufacture food in my home. Who do I contact? |
The N.C. Department of Agriculture is responsible for permitting home-based kitchen businesses.
According to the department, only low-risk packaged food can be produced at home for sale. That includes baked goods, jams and jellies, candies, dried mixes, spices and some sauces and liquids.
If there is a pet is in the house, even if it’s just at night, the person cannot manufacture goods in his or her kitchen, the agency states. Doing so is a violation of federal regulations on manufacturing practices.
For more information about determining if a home meets federal food safety requirements or application materials to be inspected as a home-based food business, go to N.C. Department of Agriculture webpage for more details. |

| My parents are in an Assisted Living facility. Do you inspect these? |
Yes we do. We inspect these Facilities as well as Nursing Homes and Hospitals. The permitting authority for these Facilities is the Division of Facility Services. They outsource the Sanitation and Food Safety aspects to us. On a routine basis, we render the results to the Division of Facility Services for their disposition and consideration. |
