The Environmental Health Division of the Guilford County Department of Public Health has Health Educators who specialize in offering school and community programs designed to increase the public’s awareness of environmental issues and their relationship to personal health. The focus areas include: Appropriate Behavior Around Animals, Asthma and Indoor Air Quality, “Fads” That Affect Health, Food Protection and Safety, General Environmental Health, Importance and Prevention of Foodborne Illness, Importance of Handwashing, Lead Poisoning, Rabies and Radon. Other presentations can be developed for individual group needs.

Any programs presented in the Guilford County Schools meets the Standard Course of Study for each grade level.

Asthma and Indoor Air Quality:

Asthma has reached epidemic proportions and is now the number one chronic disease among children. Asthma is also the single leading cause of school absenteeism and is a major cause of hospital emergency room visits every year. The causes of asthma are yet unknown, but research indicates that certain environmental factors (allergens) are known to increase the incidence and severity of asthma episodes (“attacks”). The Children’s Environmental Health Division and the Environmental Health Educators are offering a free home assessment to parents/guardians of children with asthma. Our staff will visit the home and make suggestions of ways to reduce possible allergens and create a healthier breathing environment for the child.
