The Regional Juvenile Detention
Center is dedicated to serving the area's juvenile justice needs by providing safe and
secure custody to juveniles between the ages of eight and sixteen who are awaiting court
action or transfers to other facilities. Each year, the Center temporarily houses
approximately 800 juveniles from a five county area, which includes Guilford, Alamance,
Randolph, Rockingham and Caswell.
A full educational program is conducted on a concept, rather than unit, basis to make
it easier for a child to acclimate to the work at any given time. Particular emphasis is
placed on remedial reading and math.
Since the Center is intended only as a temporary care unit while the juvenile awaits
adjudication and/or disposition, it cannot offer extended therapy or treatment. Efforts
are made to initiate the process through evaluation, diagnosis, and counseling). The
juveniles are provided with clothing, linen, personal grooming items, food, and medical
attention Recreation and arts and crafts sessions are offered, and the Center conducts an
extensive volunteer and university internship program to work with the juveniles.
