In looking for ways to reduce cost, Guilford County Purchasing Department researched using recycled cartridges for their laserjet and inkjet printers. A local African American – owned printer cartridge recycling company that was noted for producing high performing recycled cartridges was provided an opportunity to do business with Guilford County. In order to bring Guilford County users on board with recycled printer cartridges, a pilot program with Laser Tech Co. (owned by Arthur Jones) was started in June 2005. As Guilford County Departments began using the printer cartridges, they found that performance was at a more than acceptable level and the prices were less expensive than new OEM printer cartridges. Many Guilford County Departments now utilize Laser Tech’s recycled printer cartridges and are saving the county thousands of dollars.

Laser Tech owner, Arthur Jones still remembers being part of a downsizing activity at Pitney Bowes in 1989; reading an article about going in to business refurbishing printer cartridges; taking his severance pay and investing in equipment needed to refurbish printer cartridges. It started as a one man operation in his garage and now 17 years later has grown to a business that employs 12 individuals.

Laser Tech’s customers include Procter and Gamble, AT&T, General Dynamics, NC State University, A&T State University, American Express, Guilford County, Guilford County Schools, Jefferson Pilot, Gilbarco, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Schools.

Guilford County Facilities Department uses various types of hardware, fixtures, electrical components, and cabling to maintain its buildings. Our Facilities Director supports Guilford County’s MWBE Program and ensures that minority vendors are considered when purchasing required items to maintain our buildings. Reyes Supply Company (Hispanic Female owned) tried a number of times to increase business with Guilford County but nothing worked. When the Guilford County MWBE Program was implemented, discussions with Reyes Supply Company and Guilford County Facilities brought about a win deal for both because:

• Reyes is conveniently located near Guilford County’s Facilities Building
• Reyes stock many of the electrical components used by Facilities at a reasonable price
• Reyes is a local company known for its great customer service

Aida Reyes opened her electrical supply business in 1991 and she found that there were very few minorities in the electrical supply business. Roger Campbell (husband) assists with many of the administrative tasks associated with the business. The company employs six individuals and currently sells its products to the City Of Greensboro, Guilford County, and many other local businesses.
