What’s the story with plastic grocery bags? |
Plastic grocery bags are a phenomenon that has become imprinted on our community. They can be found caught in the branches of trees and shrubbery, floating in lakes and streams, and trapped along fence lines and in gutters. These bags are made of a lightweight plastic film that does not break up or biodegrade. Largely because of the problems associated with the bags jamming the equipment that’s used for sorting and processing recyclables, they cannot be recycled through your residential collection program. However, they are extremely easy to recycle! Simply take them back to the grocery store with you and drop them off in the recycling bin provided by the store. Most often, the bag recycling containers are located just inside the store entrance. You’ll usually find one for plastic bags and one for paper bags as well. |
